Japan

Wednesday, March 26th, 2008

I haven’t written this on the blog yet, but we are going to Japan! In a week!!  Crazy last minute trip but it promises to be stressful and hectic and hopefully fun.  We leave the 3rd of April and get back the morning of the 14th, just in time for work.

Japan Nite 2008 @ The Independent

Saturday, March 22nd, 2008

I went to Japan Nite again this year with my co-worker Jeff. This time there were no specific bands that I knew or really wanted to see but I had been told Detroit 7 rocked so I gave ‘em a shot.

I really enjoyed the show again. They all had good crowd interactions and Petty Booka was too cute for words, their ukulele covers of country was just something you have to see.

The show opened with Scandal a quartet of “school girls” playing just regular rock, I had previewed some songs on their myspace page, (my second visit to myspace ever) and wasn’t really impressed, but live, they did an alright job.  I ended up getting a signed tshirt because initially Jeff was going to get one and a photo with the band, but they had sold out of large shirts so I “stepped up” and got the shirt/photo instead.

Next up were The Emeralds who rocked pretty good and managed to work in hocking their merch as part of the show. Fun guys.

Then the rocking began in earnest with Ketchup Mania. Loud and high energy, I liked them a lot.

Detroit 7 followed and raised the rock bar to 11.

Petty Booka I just can’t describe, just see this. It was big change of pace from the last act but everyone was totally into it.

The Beaches were up last and they brought the crazy. Hard to describe music meets onstage (and off) antics. At one point the singer got ono the shoulders of this big guy standing at the front of the stage and was carried around for a minute. He then proceeded further into the crowd who swarmed him as he kept singing.

A good show and definately worth the $13 I paid for it.

Harold & Kumar the return

Sunday, March 16th, 2008

We went and watched Harold and Kumar Escape From Guantanimo Bay yesterday with Stella.  It’s not going to be released until the end of April but this was the west-coast premier at the SF Asian Film Festival.  I enjoyed the film, especially the scenes with NPH and the unicorn, but I prefer the original to this one.  The original seemed a bit more subtle or varied in the jokes, this one was (as sequels usually are) more in your face about the race/political stuff.

There was a Q&A session afterwards with John Cho; who said that after
seeing what audiences liked about the original on dvd, they focused more on that stuff rather than if they had immediately made a sequel it would’ve been more of a wacky-antics-and-hijinks-euro-trip type of movie.   I’m ok that they didn’t do that because really, there have been a lot of terrible road trip films and I don’t need to see any more.

I say go see it in the theatre, you’ll laugh.

oh yeah…

Our CEO will be on ABC World News tonight talking about spam.  Maybe it’ll be interesting, or not.

not dead

So I’m back to the gym after slacking since hmm October. I’ve moved from the olde school but cool gym in Oakland to a fancy-shmancy one in SF since I’m no longer able to get up early enough in the morning to do the gym thing before going to work and a few of the other guys at work go to the new one so I’ll feel more motivated to go.

ring in a box

Finally got the ring back from the jewellers. The photo is kinda crappy but it looks nice in person. It’s a bit loose on her finger so we’re going to have to back and get it adjusted.
