I’m turning officially old on Sunday.  Buy me things from my amazon list.

Almost success

After a billion attempts, I finally got Linux installed on my laptop and have X displaying pretty graphics. It’s not perfect since GNOME shows up in 1024×768 while the screen itself is displaying in 1280×800. There are some minor wrinkles to iron out but it’s doable. yay. Guess I’ll keep this one and work out the final problems.

I finished the Harry Potters

Saturday, August 11th, 2007

More catching up.  I finished book 7 of the Harry Potter series on Sunday night.  I had about 100 pages left when I got home from Vegas and begged and pleaded to be allowed to finish it that same night since it’s like pausing a movie in the last 10 minutes.  It was good but intense.  For those playing along at home I had mangled the titles of all the HP books as I read them and shall now list them all for you here:

  • Harry Potter: Episode I – The Philosopher’s Menace
  • Harry Potter: Episode II – The Chamber of  the Clones
  • Harry Potter: Episode III – Revenge of the Prisoner of Azkaban
  • Harry Potter: Episode IV – A New Goblet of Fire
  • Harry Potter: Episode V – The Order of the Phoenix Strikes Back
  • Harry Potter: Episode VI – Return of the Half-Blood Prince
  • Harry Potter: Episode VII – The Death Star Hallows

I think that these titles still work for the books.

I also finally caught the fifth HP movie this week, it was enjoyable but I noticed that there may be difficult writings ahead for the next two films due to continuity issues between the books and films.

I got the laptop

Saturday, August 11th, 2007

The laptop got shipped almost a month earlier than what Dell had projected and I received it Monday afternoon.

It’s pretty sweet but I’m having some regrets at the moment and thinking I should’ve gone with the Thinkpad.  :(  (at least for what I’m trying to do with it).

Linux doesn’t want to install on it.  Ubuntu chokes before the system really boots up and Debian doesn’t have a driver for the NIC.  The DVD drive is apparently notorious for not allowing “hacks” to allow it to read non region 1 DVDs.  Region locking is a crime against humanity.

Mostly the hardware is too new to have easliy working drivers and install procedures for Linux at this time, while the Thinkpad would’ve been up and running almost out of the box.

Vista isn’t too bad for windows though, no real complaints there yet.

i have survived vegas

I got back last night from BlackHat/Defcon.  It was HOT.  It was full of DORKS.

I will have more updates later today or tomorrow.  I have to go to a Giants/Nationals game tonight.
