Boxee

Wednesday, March 11th, 2009

I received my AppleTV last night from über-retailer Amazon. I took it home and installed Boxee onto it. Boxee is The Shit.
Previously, I had been using UShare on my Linux desktop to stream video from the network share to play on the xbox 360 but it mysteriously stopped working a couple months ago.
Boxee is way better. The process to add it to the AppleTV took 5 minutes and was dead simple. Create a boot usbkey and then plug that shit in.

Trying to add my wifi key to the AppleTV was more frustrating and took longer. The onscreen keyboard is weirdly laid out alphabetically and the remote wasn’t behaving. It would take me mashing in the button ten times for it to register. Typing in a long passphrase was not happening so I gave up and attached an Ethernet cable.

My first problem with Vista

Apparently one cannot create directories with periods at the end of their names.

So when I copy music from my Linux partition to the windows one to add music to my iphone, if it’s M.I.A. it can’t be read because of the trailing dot. I also can’t fix the dir in vista, I have to reboot back to Linux, mount the partition, rename the directory, reboot (again) into Vista, fire up iTunes, start iTunes again because it crashed -it is some seriously shifty software- and then finally sync the music.
If you try to even create a trailing dot directory the name gets truncated.

That my friends is some WEAKSAUCE.

I mention this at work and all I hear is “get a Mac”. :(

Blogging from my iPhone is convenient because I can insto-rant, which is quite gratifying.
